Hi Dana, Thank you for this clarification. I have studied with several Arab musicians here in the US and they have all told me this is called Taqsim and among musicians it is understood as an "improvisation" or "solo" for one instrument. For example, two of my musician friends and teachers Rachid Halihal and Souhail Kaspar have explained it in this way to me. Additionally, in Egypt they also call it taksim when the orchestra for is preparing for a dancer a impromptu solo with a single instrument. In fact I just did it a few week ago and we used the word taqsim to request an accordion solo. It is entirely possible they have another way of explaining it to an Egyptian or Arab speaking dancer.
